Diving Into the Riches of Scripture
The wisdom in James is miracle grow for the soul!
For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. ~James 3:16-17
Some translations use the word gentle, while others use considerate. I love these words being interchangeable, it reveals so much about God's idea of gentleness. When you go to the Greek root of things, the original term used was "epieikes", and it means to be reasonable or fair. Doesn't that shed some much needed light on what godly gentleness looks like?
Digging deeper into scripture can truly bring about a newfound understanding of God's instructions to us, His children. Studying, and not just reading and moving on, leads to so many wonderful discoveries and to a profound appreciation for His Word. I can't name the number of times this study alone has opened my eyes to Truths I've never known.
I'll share another nugget that stuck with me from this same scripture.
The passage I quoted today was from my New Revised Standard Version, and I love that this translation reads "willing to yield" in the place where others simply say "submissive" or "reasonable". Seeing submission as being a yielding to reason and not just an act of blind obedience demonstrates the power we exert when we practice the submission that God requires.
God graces us with strength, purpose, wisdom, direction, patience...godly characteristics without which we will never succeed at living for Him. Studying His Word will reveal these characteristics, grow them, and solidify them as part of who we are in our daily walk with the Lord. James is a great place to start, if you're not already diving into the riches of scripture!
